Last Action: The Saints opened up the 2010 season on Tuesday night with a two-game sweep of Hamline University. The Saints won the first game, 6-2, behind the pitching of #Steve Gerten# (St. Paul, Minn.) and the second game, 10-2, behind stellar pitching from #Josh Hawkins# (Woodbury, Minn.) and hitting from #Sean Claugherty# (Oakdale, Minn.). Hawkins and Gerten combined to pitch 10.2 innings and struck out 12 batters. #Tom Juberian# (Park Rapids, Minn.) led all players going 5-for-7 on the night, scoring three times and getting one RBI. Claugherty had four RBIs on the night. This will be St. Thomas's first game of the season.

St. Scholastica Saints: After their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA tournament last year, the Saints are poised for another run this year. The Saints are led by 2010 D3Baseball.com Preseason All-American First Baseman Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS). Since emerging as a freshman, Claugherty has been a force in the Saints line-up. He has a career batting average of .397 and an incredible OPS of 1.179. In just three seasons, he ranks in the top ten for the Saints in career batting, slugging, and home runs. Gerten and #Jeff Adams# (Two Harbors, Minn.) are the team's top returning pitchers. Gerten posted a 5-1 record last year and a career-high for numbers at the plate. Adams has primarily been a bullpen man of late. First-team All-UMAC performer #Paul Kolodge# (Cloquet, Minn.) is the team's starting catcher. Kolodge posted career-highs in virtually every offensive statistical category last year. The Saints brought in their biggest recruiting class ever this year, with the hopes that they can step in and contribute immediately.

St. Thomas Tommies: The Tommies are the defending D3 National Champions after going 41-13 last year to win their seventh consecutive MIAC Championship. St. Thomas returns 20 of their top 25 players from last year. The Tommies will be led by preseason All-American pitcher Matt Schuld. Schuld went 12-1 last year to lead the Tommies. Outfielder Matt Olson is the team's top hitter. Olson batted .380 last year in 45 games and had a perfect fielding percentage as one of the team's starting outfielders. After the retiring of 15-year head coach Dennis Denning, the Tommies will have a new face at the helm in interim head coach Chris Olean.

Last Meeting: The two teams faced off four times last season with St. Thomas winning three out of four. The Saints and Tommies split a doubleheader early in the season at the Metrodome. The Saints won the first game 3-1 and lost the second game 2-0. Then in the final game of the regular season the Tommies beat the Saints 4-3 in Duluth. The two teams would play again when it all mattered, in the NCAA regional playoffs. The Saints were just five outs away from beating St. Thomas, before the Tommies plated seven in the bottom of the eighth to win the game 8-4.
