MINNEAPOLIS – The 21st-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team played its final doubleheader in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome for the season this morning and swept Augsburg College 15-2 and 5-3.
The two wins give the Saints an overall record of 13-3, while the Auggies fall to 6-11 overall. This was the first meeting between the two programs since the 2001 season when current CSS head coach
Corey Kemp was hurling for the Saints.
It was all CSS in game one. An eight-run second inning propelled the Saints out in front for good. After they stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Saints had the first five batters reach base in the second with a two-run single coming from #Joe Link# (
Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) to begin the scoring. Later in the second, #Scott Greening# (
Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) drove in three with a bases clearing double to extend the margin to 5-0. #Paul Kolodge# (
Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) added a two-run triple and #Andy Manos# (
Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a RBI-single to make it 8-0.
Greening had a two-run double and Kolodge had a sacrifice fly in the third to make it 11-0. After #Sean Claugherty# (
Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) had a RBI-single in the fourth, CSS plated three more in the fifth. #Brian Peterson# (
Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray) and
Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) had RBI-singles in the inning. Also in his first collegiate at-bat, #Chris Anderson# (
Fr.-Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) drove in a run to make the final score 15-2.
#Steve Gerten# (
Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) improved to 4-0 on the year, pitching four innings and allowing just three hits. #David Barningham# (
Jr.-Bayfield, Wis./Washburn) and #Jake Nystrom# (
Fr.-Fargo, N.D./North) pitched three scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit.
Game two would be tighter, but the Saints struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) scored on an Augsburg error and #Brian Marshik# (
Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) scored on a
Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) infield single.
CSS tacked on another run in the fourth with a
Paul Kolodge (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) RBI-double to make it 3-0.
Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) drove in #Chad Peterson# (
Jr.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) with a RBI-double in the fifth and then scored on a groundout to make it 5-0.
The Auggies cut into the lead in a big way in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run into the second deck of right field. However, #David Vogelgesang# (
Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) shut the door in the seventh for his first career save as the Saints prevailed 5-3.
#Matt Lewis# (
Jr.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) improved to 3-1 as he struck out four in six innings of work.
The Saints will open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play next weekend when they travel to face Northwestern College for a three-game series. Friday's single game will begin at 3 p.m. The games can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
