BASEBALL ENDS FLORIDA TRIP WITH PIVOTAL SWEEP

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The St. Scholastica baseball team defeated twin port rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 9-0 and Central College (Iowa) 8-7 on Saturday.

The Saints improve to 11-3 overall and finish 9-1 in Florida. Today's games were particularly important because they were both in-region games.

The Saints began the day by shutting out UW-Superior 9-0. The bridge battle took place over 1,700 miles away at the former spring training complex of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Vero Beach, Fla.

#Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 10 for CSS. #Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) and #Chad Peterson# (Jr.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) added some of the offense for the Saints with a pair of two-run home runs.

The Saints scored three runs in the top of the second thanks to four Yellowjacket errors in the inning. #Brandon Peterson# (So.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) and #Brian Marshik# (Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) had the other two RBIs in the game for the Saints. Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) finished with three RBIs in the contest.

St. Scholastica concluded the trip, hanging on for an 8-7 victory over Central College. #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) had a two-out RBI-double in the bottom of the first to get things started. Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) added a RBI-single and #Sean Claugherty# (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) scored on a Kolodge groundout in the third to extend the lead to 3-1.

After the Dutch led off the fourth with a home run, CSS plated five in the bottom half to extend the margin to 8-2.Central scored a run in the fifth and seventh to make it 8-4 and added two more in the eighth to cut it to 8-6. With one out in the ninth, the Dutch homered to cut the Saints lead to 8-7, but CSS would hang on to win by that score.

#Matt Lewis# (Jr.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) pitched five innings of relief to improve to 2-1 on the year. #David Vogelgesang# (Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) started for CSS and pitched four innings for the no decision. Paul Kolodge (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Saints offensively.

The Saints will be back in Minnesota for a doubleheader against Augsburg College on Thursday morning on Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The first game is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The games can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
