SAINTS SWEEP VALIANTS TO OPEN SPRING TRIP

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The 25th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team put up a lot of runs in sweeping Manhattanville College this afternoon, taking game one 17-8 and game two 15-5.

The Saints improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Valiants fall 1-3. The Saints are 10-0 against Manhattanville since 2001.

In the opener, the Valiants got off to a good start, having three runs come across in the bottom of the first. #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) then led off the top of the second with a home run to make it 3-1. Later in the inning, #Scott Greening# (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) scored on a #Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) fielder's choice to make it 3-2. However, the Saints would leave the bases loaded in the inning.

After Manhattanville hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, the Saints tied the game in the top of the third with a two-out rally as Greening scored on a #Chad Peterson# (Jr.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) single and Peterson scored on a hit-and-run from first on an #Andy Manos# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) hit to the gap.

The Valiants added two more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-4. The Saints responded in the top of the fourth with an RBI-double from #Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) to score #Brian Marshik# (Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View). Paul Kolodge (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) and Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) then hit back-to-back RBI-triples to give CSS its first lead at 7-6.

Manhattanville went scoreless for the first time in the bottom of the fourth and the Saints added to their lead in the fifth. #Brandon Peterson# (So.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) scored on a Marshik sacrifice fly and then #Tom Juberian# (So.-Park Rapids, Minn.) drove in two with a single to left. Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) followed with a two-run single, Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) had RBI-single, and Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had a sacrifice fly. When it was all said and done the Saints had seven runs score and extended their lead to 14-6.

Both teams added runs late as the final would be 17-8 CSS. Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) improved to 2-0 this season, pitching five innings.

In game two, the Saints got on the board first on a Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) RBI-single to make it 1-0 after one inning. CSS then had five runs come across in the second with two of those runs coming off a Greening double.

CSS scored six more runs in the third inning to make it 12-1. Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had two-run double in the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, #Brian Peterson# (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray) and Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) each had a triple that drove in a total of three runs to make the final 15-5.

#David Vogelgesang# (Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) earned his first collegiate win going 4.2 innings.

The Saints will play another doubleheader tomorrow against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The first game will begin at 11 a.m. local time. All of the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
