DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team used a 17-1 run at the start of the second half thanks in large part to #Danny Schmitz#'s (
Jr.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) career-high 32 as the Saints rallied past Presentation 65-52 tonight at Reif Gym.
The Saints improve to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). Presentation falls to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the league. CSS has won 11 of the last 13 meetings.
Presentation came out with a lot of emotion and would get out to a 17-11 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half. Later in the half, the Saints went on a 7-0 run to take the lead on a #Derek Anderson# (
Jr.-Cook, Minn.) jumper. However, Presentation closed the half on a 6-0 run and went into the locker room with a 29-24 lead.
The Saints shot 45-percent in the half, while Presentation was a little bit better at 46-percent. Presentation owned the paint in the half, outscoring the Saints 14-6. St. Scholastica's
Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS) had 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting and 1-for-1 from the free throw line.
CSS's
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) then took over in the second half, scoring 24 of his career-high 32 points. Schmitz scored 13 of CSS first 15 points in the half.
The St. Scholastica defense also came to play out of the locker room as Presentation did not score a point until nine minutes into the half and made their first field goal 11:15 seconds into the half. During that time the Saints went on a 19-4 run to take a 43-33 lead.
The Saints would hit their free throws the rest of the way to win their first conference game of the season by a final score of 65-52.
CSS shot 50-percent for the game and was 15-for-18 from the free throw line in the second half. Presentation shot 40-percent for the game and was just 8-for-15 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) had a game-high 32 for the Saints and was 11-for-13 from the free throw line.
Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS) finished with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Eric May had 13 points to lead Presentation. The Saints held Presentation leading scorer Richie Ward to just three points, all of which in the second half.
