LUMBERJACKS HANG ON AGAINST CSS MEN

ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team trailed throughout today contest against Northland College and eventually fell 67-64 at Kendrigan Gymnasium.

The Saints fall to 5-11 overall and to 2-3 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The LumberJacks improve to 4-11 overall and are also 2-3 in the conference. The 'Jacks snap a four-game losing streak to the Saints.

The 'Jacks' biggest lead in the first half was seven points on two occasions and after CSS cut it to one with 21 seconds left in the half, the LumberJacks scored five points in the final 11 seconds to go into the locker room with a 32-26 lead.

The Saints shot 31-percent in the first half and was 2-for-11 on 3-point attempts. Northland shot 46-percent in the half and was 4-for-8 on 3-point attempts.

The LumberJacks led by nine at the start of the second half, but the Saints chipped the margin down to three with 12 minutes to go. Northland answered and had its biggest lead of the game, 55-45, with 5:39 remaining. CSS was not done yet as it went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to one with 2:35 to go.

Northland then hit a pair of free throws and drained a 3-pointer on the following possession to extend the lead back to six and the LumberJacks held on from there winning 67-64.

The Saints finished at 37-percent for the game and were 20-for-30 from the free throw line. The LumberJacks shot 52-percent for the game. Other than shooting the Saints had the edge in just about every statistical category.

#Danny Schmitz# (Jr.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) had 17 points to lead the Saints for the fourth straight game. #Chris Hamers# (Jr.-Onamia, Minn.) added 16 points off the bench. #Derek Anderson# (Jr.-Cook, Minn.) had a career-high 11 rebounds. Ryan Cannata poured in 22 points to lead Northland.

The Saints will be at home again next weekend when they face Martin Luther College on Friday night and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. Friday night's game begins at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women's game. It can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
