Shaky Northwestern pitching staff allows 12 St. Scholastica runs

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica Saints bounced back from their 10-9 extra-inning loss Friday night with a triumphant 12-2 victory over the Northwestern College Eagles to advance to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament championship later this afternoon.

The Saints showed their patience in the first inning, drawing six walks and a hit-by-pitch against Northwestern starter Mark Meredith and reliever Scott Swanson. They scored seven runs in the opening frame via two sacrifice flies, a pair of infield hits, and two Northwestern errors.

#Brandon Peterson# (Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) added singles in the second and third innings, scoring on a passed ball in the second and knocking #Chad Peterson# (So.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) in the third as the Saints pulled ahead 10-2 with just five hits on the board after three. The Eagles scored their two runs in the top half of the inning courtesy of a two-RBI double from catcher Erik Dahl.

Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) singled in a pair of runs with two outs in the sixth inning to put the Saints up 12-2. The Saints finished with ten hits on the afternoon in their seven-inning mercy rule victory.

#Matt Lewis# (So.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory HS) pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Saints, allowing just two runs on seven hits, relieving the Saints bullpen which allowed five runs on Thursday night.

The Saints will now face Bethany Lutheran in a rematch of last night's extra-inning epic in the championship game at 4 p.m. today. If CSS pulls out the victory, a second game will take place immediately after to crown the UMAC Tournament champion.
