SAINTS MOVE ON TO FACE BETHANY LUTHERAN AFTER TRIUMPH OVER EAGLES

DULUTH, Minn. – The eighth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team defeated Northwestern College this afternoon by a score of 12-2 in the opening round of the 2009 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament at Wade Stadium.

After not getting a hit in the first two innings, the Saints would score five in the bottom of third. Three of the five runs came off a bases-clearing double by #Sean Claugherty# (Jr.-Tartan, Minn./Oakdale). Claugherty then scored on a groundout. #Nick Lee# (Sr.-Carlton, Minn.) later came around to score on a #Brandon Peterson# (Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) RBI-double.

After Northwestern got on the board in the top of the fourth, #Steve Gerten# (Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) had a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to make it 6-1. In the fifth, #Chad Peterson# (So.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village), and #Brian Marshik# (So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) had RBI-singles, while #Joe Link# (So.-Woodbury, Minn.) drove in a run with a double to make the score 9-2.

In the seventh inning, Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had a two-run double and Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had a RBI-single to center to make the final score 12-2 in seven innings.

#Jake Gaub# (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) got the win for the Saints as he scattered eight hits in six innings. Ryan Nelson had the loss for the Eagles. Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) was 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead CSS at the plate.

The Saints move on to face Bethany Lutheran, who defeated Presentation College in the first game of the day. The Saints and Vikings will square off tonight at 7 p.m.
