OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back to eliminate the St. Scholastica baseball team by a score of 9-3 today in the NCAA Oshkosh Regional at E.J. Schneider Field.
The Saints struck first for the third straight regional game in the top of the second, thanks to a pair of Pointer errors. #Steve Gerten# (
Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) began the inning by reaching on a throwing error and advancing to second. #Kyle Wojtysiak# (
Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) followed by also reaching on a throwing error. With runners at the corners, #Tom Juberian# (
Fr.-Park Rapids, Minn.) roped a double over the right fielder's head to score Gerten. Wojtysiak then scored on a groundout to make it 2-0 CSS.
The Pointers got those runs right back in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI-singles. The Saints also threw a runner out at the plate in the inning to keep the score all squared.
Stevens Point would have the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and Brad Archambeau would get a two-run single just out the reach of Wojtysiak at short. Another run came in on a double steal and another on a passed ball. The Pointers added one more run in the inning to have a 7-2 lead. All of these runs would not have occurred if the Saints had not committed an error at the start of the inning.
The Pointers added to their lead in the seventh with a pair of runs coming across. The Saints would score one more run in the game when #Brandon Peterson# (
Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) trotted in from third on a Stevens Point balk.
#Matt Lewis# (
Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) had the loss for the Saints, his first of the season. Seven different Saints had hits.
The Saints season ends with a 36-7 record. This was the fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance for CSS and the sixth overall. For future information on St. Scholastica baseball be sure to keep checking csssaints.com.
