OSHKOSH, Wis. – The St. Scholastica baseball team was just five outs away from improving to 2-0 in the regional until the University of St. Thomas strung a couple hits together in the bottom of the eighth and had seven runners come across in the inning to rally to an 8-4 victory in the NCAA Oshkosh Regional at E.J. Schneider Field.
The Saints would be the visiting team on the scoreboard and the first three batters reached base. Then after a strikeout, the Tommies had a chance to get out of the inning, but the second baseman would throw the ball away trying to complete the double play. That allowed #Brian Marshik# (
So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) and #Chad Peterson# (
So.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) to score and make the score 2-0.
CSS starting pitcher #Adian Kummet# (
Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) got off to good start as he did not allow a hit in the first five innings. The first hit allowed was leading off the bottom of the sixth on a hard ground ball to first that took a bad hop and went into right field.
The Saints added to their lead in the top of the sixth on a #Brandon Peterson# (
Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) sacrifice fly that plated #Nick Lee# (
Sr.-Carlton, Minn.) to make it 3-0.
In the top of the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs,
Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS), who was standing at first, broke for second and was caught in a run down and as that was going on, #Kyle Wojtysiak# (
Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) broke for home and got under the tag to make it 4-0.
The Tommies got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. They ended up stranding a runner at third in the inning on a close play at first.
However in the eighth, the Tommies would strike for seven in the inning to take an 8-4 lead. St. Thomas got a two-run single by Dan Leslie and then tied the game on a wild pitch. Then with two outs, Tom Wippler hit a blooper over the second baseman to give the Tommies the lead. Another flare shot to shallow to right field allowed one to score and another scored on a errant throw to make it a three-run St. Thomas lead.
#Jeff Adams# (
Jr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) had the loss for CSS.
Nick Lee (Carlton, Minn./Carlton HS) was 2-for-4 to lead the Saints with the bat.
Adian Kummet (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) allowed just five hits and struck out three in 7.1 innings to get the no decision.
St. Thomas moves on to face St. Olaf College at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, while the Saints will play the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. The loser of that game is eliminated, while the winner will play the loser of the St. Thomas/St. Olaf game at 4 p.m.
