DULUTH, Minn. – Playing five games in 27 hours did not slow down the fourth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team as it completed a tripleheader sweep of Northwestern College today at Wade Stadium to extend its winning streak to 20 games.

The Saints improve to 29-2 overall and 17-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The 20 consecutive wins are the longest since they won 20 during the 2004 season. The Eagles fall to 14-19 overall and 9-9 in the league.

In the first game of the day, CSS scored four runs in the third on their way to a 6-3 victory. The Saints pushed a run across in the first inning on a #Jake Gaub# (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) RBI-single up the middle. In the third inning, #Nick Lee# (Sr.-Carlton, Minn.) came in as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and hit a two-run double to extend the lead to 3-0. #Joe Link# (So.-Woodbury, Minn.) followed with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

The Eagles responded with two unearned runs in the fourth and then added another run in the fifth cut the margin to 5-3. #Brian Marshik# (So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) scored from second on a Northwestern error that would have ended the fifth as the score was now 6-3.

#Steve Gerten# (Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) then shut the door on the Eagles as he pitched a perfect sixth and seventh to improve to 5-0 overall. Gerten went the distance, striking out three and allowing just one earned run. #Sean Claugherty# (Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) was 2-for-4 to lead CSS at the plate.

In game two, the Saints used a five-run bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie to win going away 10-5. Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) and Nick Lee (Carlton, Minn./Carlton HS) had RBI-singles in the third inning. #Brandon Peterson# (Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) also added a two-run double and Jake Gaub (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) had a sacrifice fly.

CSS added four runs in the fourth with a two-RBI single by #Kyle Moody# (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and another Jake Gaub (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) sacrifice fly. #Josh Retka# (So.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) pitched five innings to win his third game of the season. Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Jake Gaub (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) had two hits apiece to lead the Saints offensively.

In the nightcap, #Peter Burg# (Sr.-St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) struck out five in five innings of work to improve to 9-0 this season in a 10-1 Saints triumph. #Tom Juberian# (Fr.-Park Rapids, Minn.) had a two-RBI-single and Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) drove in two with double as St. Scholastica scored four in the second.

With the score 4-1 CSS in the fourth, Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) ripped a RBI-double to extend the lead to 5-1. The Saints then put the game away in the sixth by putting five runs on the board. Three of those runs came off of a Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) double as the Saints completed a three-game sweep of the Eagles, winning 10-1. Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the last game of the day.

The Saints will be on the road on Tuesday when they go out of conference to face St. Olaf College for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. All of the action can be heard on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
