SAINTS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 11

MORRIS, Minn. – The ninth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team swept a doubleheader at the University of Minnesota-Morris this afternoon, winning game one, 12-0, and game two, 10-2.

The Saints have now won 11 straight games and improve to an overall record of 20-2 and a 9-0 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record. This is the 15th straight season the Saints have achieved at least 20 wins. The Cougars fall to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

In game one, Morris loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but could not push a runner across. The Saints would get their first hit of the game in the third inning on a #Joe Link# (So.-Woodbury, Minn.) single. Link would eventually steal home to give CSS a 1-0 lead. Later in the top of the third, #Tom Juberian# (Fr.-Park Rapids, Minn.) had a bases clearing triple to make it 4-0.

In the fourth, five St. Scholastica runners came across plate. #Sean Claugherty# (Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) and #Paul Kolodge# (Jr.-Cloquet, Minn.) both had two-run singles. #Kyle Wojtysiak# (Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) also had a bases loaded walk to make the score 9-0 after four.

#Andy Manos# (So.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a RBI-single in the sixth inning and #Michael Harris# (So.-Andover, Minn.) had a two-run double in the seventh to make the final score 12-0.

#Jake Gaub# (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) pitched five innings and struck out six to improve to 3-0 this season. #Dan Lanari# (Sr.-Virginia, Minn./Mt. Iron-Buhl) pitched two hitless innings in relief. Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) and Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) both went 2-for-4 to lead the Saints offensively.

CSS scored five runs in the first to begin game two as Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) had a two-run single, Jake Gaub (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and #Griffin Bell# (So.-Oconomowoc, Wis.) had a RBI-singles, and Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) scored on an error. #Kyle Moody# (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) led off the top of the third with his first collegiate home run. Later in the inning Kyle Wojtysiak (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) drove in Link with a single to make the score 7-0.

In the fifth inning, Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) scored on a Cougar-error and #Steve Gerten# (Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) had a RBI-single. The last CSS run of the game came by way of a Griffin Bell (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc HS) sacrifice fly that plated Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS). Morris scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to end the back-to-back shutout bid, but the Saints still cruised to a 10-2 victory.

#Josh Retka# (So.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) was very effective on the mound for St. Scholastica as he allowed just two hits and struck out six in six innings of work. Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) was 2-for-3 and Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) was 2-for-4 to lead CSS at the plate.

The Saints and Cougars will play one, nine-inning game tomorrow beginning at noon at Cougar Field. The game can be heard on ESPN the Radio 560-WEBC.
