FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The 12th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team needed all 13 runs on its way to a 13-12 victory this morning over Penn State University-Behrend in Fort Pierce, Fla.
The Saints improve to 6-1 overall, while Behrend suffers its first loss of the season and is now 2-1. The Lions were a NCAA Regional participant last season.
The Lions got on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a two-out rally that pushed one run across. The Saints had their own two-out rally in the bottom of the first. With no one on and two outs CSS had three straight singles, capped off with a #Jake Gaub# (
Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) RBI-single to drive in #Sean Claugherty# (
Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) to tie the game 1-1.
CSS took the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI by #Brian Marshik# (
So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) to drive in #Chad Peterson# (
So.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village). The Saints added to the lead in the bottom of the third.

The Lions made the score 5-2 in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Behrend had a run-scoring single to cut it to 5-3. The Saints got one of those runs back in the bottom half as

Behrend would tie it at 6-6 in the top of the fifth thanks to a three-run home run. St. Scholastica regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a

In the bottom of the seventh,
Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) drilled a two-strike RBI-double to score two and make the score 9-6. Later in the inning,
Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 11-6.
The Lions added three runs in the top of the eighth to make things interesting and make the score 11-9. CSS responded in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly by
Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) that scored #Kyle Wojtysiak# (
Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) to make the score 12-9. Later in the inning, #Brandon Peterson# (
Fr.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) had his first collegiate hit in his first at-bat with a RBI-double to make it 13-9.
Behrend would not give up as in the top of the ninth they added a run to cut it to 13-10 and then loaded the bases with two outs. The Lions followed that with a two-run single to cut the lead to 13-12. With the tying run at third and the leading run at second, #Adian Kummet# (
Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) got the batter to fly out to center to finally end the game at 13-12.

Sr.-St. Joseph's, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) earned the win on the mound, going six innings to improve to 4-0 on the season.
