CSS DROPS A CLOSE ONE TO THE COBBERS

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team lost by a score of 5-4 this evening to Concordia-Moorhead in the Burns Wellness Commons.

The loss drops the Saints to 4-8 overall, while the Cobbers improve to 5-5 overall. The Saints are now 1-2 all-time against Concordia-Moorhead.

The Cobbers took the top two doubles matches, but the team of #Cody Bottem# (Fr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and #Tim Dean# (Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) improved to 6-0 on the year with an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

In singles, #Jacob Engelstad# (Fr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) won at the No. 2 spot 6-3, 6-0. With three singles match left on the day, CSS needed to win all three to take the match. First at No. 6 singles, #Kevin Hilpert# (Fr.-Stillwater, Minn.) won the first set 6-2, dropped the second 6-4, and then rallied to win the third-set super tiebreak 10-6. #Joe Vidmar# (So.-Chisholm, Minn./Hibbing) at No. 4 singles finished off his opponent 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 for his fourth straight victory. So it all came down to the No. 5 singles. In a tough, hard-fought match, Cody Bottem (Thief River Falls, Minn/Lincoln HS) was edged out by a score of 7-5, 6-4.

The Saints will be back in action next Saturday when they face Northwestern College in a conference match. That match is supposed to get underway at 3 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
