FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The ninth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end this afternoon with a 4-3 defeat to Ursinus College (Pa.) in Fort Pierce, Fla.
The Saints fall to 9-2 overall with the loss and are now 6-1 in Florida. The Bears improve to 6-6 with the win.
CSS had their chances early as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and pushed one across as #Griffin Bell# (
So.-Oconomowoc, Wis.) drew a walk to score #Tom Juberian# (
Fr.-Park Rapids, Minn.). However, with just one out and the bases loaded that was the only run for the Saints that inning.
The Bears tied the game in the top of the second with a RBI-single. The Saints then left the bases loaded again in the bottom of the second. Ursinus took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a RBI-single.
St. Scholastica responded by plating two in the bottom of the fourth. #Kyle Wojtysiak# (
Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) drove in #Joe Link# (
So.-Woodbury, Minn.) from second to tie the contest at 2-2. Wojtysiak later scored in the inning on a #Sean Claugherty# (
Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) sacrifice fly to give CSS a 3-2 lead.
#Josh Retka# (
So.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) came in to pitch in the fifth and sat down the first six batters that he faced. However, in the seventh the Bears would tie the game when the ball just fell inside the right field line to score the runner from second. Ursinus then successfully executed a squeeze bunt to take the lead 4-3. The Saints would not threaten the rest of the way as the Bears prevailed 4-3.
Retka pitched excellent in relief for the Saints, but earned the loss as he went five innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out five. #Jake Gaub# (
Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul), who started the game on the mound, went four innings and struck out four.
Kyle Wojtysiak (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and
Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) both went 2-for-4 to pace the Saints offense that only managed five hits.
The Saints will finish up their Spring Trip tomorrow morning when they will face Centenary College (N.J.) in a doubleheader beginning at 8 a.m. Those games will not be broadcasted on the radio.
