MINNEAPOLIS – The 14th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team split a pair of quick doubleheaders tonight with 22nd-ranked University of St. Thomas, winning game one 3-1, but falling in game two 2-0 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
In the bottom of the first of game one, #Brian Marshik# (So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) hit a triple, then scored on a #Sean Claugherty# (
Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) RBI-double to make the score 1-0. The Saints extended that lead in the bottom of the fourth when #Jake Gaub# (
Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) led off the inning with a double off the top of the wall. Gaub advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt and scored on a #Steve Gerten# (
Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.
St. Thomas, who was playing its first game of the season, cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth with a RBI-single to make the score 2-1. The Saints got that run back in the bottom of the inning as Claugherty hit a single up the middle to drive in
Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) to make the score 3-1. That would be the final as the Saints went on to win 3-1.
#Peter Burg# (
Sr.-St. Joseph's, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) pitched a complete game, striking out two and allowing five hits to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) was 2-for-3 with a single and a double with two RBIs to lead the offense for the Saints.
The Tommies struck first in the second game with a RBI-single in the bottom of the second to make it 1-0. The inning could have been worse, but CSS threw out two runners at the plate. The first out came on a squeeze-play where Saints pitcher #Adian Kummet# (
Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) made a great play to get the runner at home. Then the second out came when CSS threw to first on a pick-off attempt, but the throw was low and the runner at third broke for home and first baseman
Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) threw out the runner at the plate to end the inning.
The Tommies added insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI-double to make the score 2-0. That is all St. Thomas pitcher Matt Schuld would need as he had 14 strikeouts on the night to give the Tommies a 2-0 victory.
The loss hands CSS its first loss of the season as the Saints are now 3-1. The Tommies leave this twin-bill with a 1-1 record.
Adian Kummet (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) picked up the loss, but pitched well, allowing just four hits in six innings. The CSS offense was unable to hit Schuld with only a pair of hits in game two.
Both of these games set Metrodome records for the fastest seven-inning game to be played in the dome. Each game only lasted a record 87 minutes.
The Saints will now head to Fort Pierce, Fla. for their Spring Trip. CSS will open up with a doubleheader against Hiram College (Ohio) a week from today. That game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
