MINNEAPOLIS – In the earliest start in St. Scholastica baseball history, the 15th-ranked Saints defeated NAIA's Mount Marty College (S.D.) 4-0 this afternoon in the Metrodome.
The Saints, without Head Coach John Baggs, got their first run of the season when #Paul Kolodge# (
Jr.-Cloquet, Minn.) led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run five rows deep into the left field bleachers. Meanwhile, #Peter Burg# (
Sr.-St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) was effective on the mound as the Lancers earned their first hit in the third and Burg allowed only one other hit in five innings of work. Mount Marty got a runner on third with two outs in the fifth, but Burg induced a groundout to himself to end the threat.
The Saints gave their pitching staff some run support in the bottom of the fifth when #Chad Peterson# (
So.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) hit a triple to right center to drive in #Steve Gerten# (
Jr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) from first base to make the score 2-0.
Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) then scored from third on a #Brian Peterson# (
So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray) sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.
#Adian Kummet# (
Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) then entered the game on the mound in the top of the sixth and proceeded to mow down the Mount Marty hitters, striking out 10 of the 17 batters that he faced. Mount Marty got a leadoff triple in the top of the eighth, but Kummet struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning. CSS got one more run in the bottom of the eighth when
Brian Peterson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored on a Lancers' error to make the final score 4-0.
Peter Burg (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) (1-0) earned the win on the mound, striking out four and allowing two hits in five innings. Kummet got the save, pitching four innings of relief. Brady Diercks had the loss for the Lancers.
Paul Kolodge (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) led the Saints' offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a pair of singles. St. Scholastica finished with six hits on the afternoon.
The Saints will not be in action next until Tuesday, February 24th when they face the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for a doubleheader in the Metrodome. The first game is scheduled to begin late at night at 11:45 p.m. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
