DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's track & field team cruised to its third straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Indoor Championship on Saturday at the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse.
The Saints won by 99 points with a total of 212 points. The University of Minnesota-Morris was in second with 113 points. Northwestern College was third with 94 points, Presentation College fourth with 58 points and North Central University third with one point. In the previous two meets the Saints edged Minnesota-Morris by a total of 63 points.
The Saints won seven events on the day and broke three program records. Head Coach
Kirk Nauman was named the UMAC Coach of the Year.
Field events began the meet with the weight throw and long jump.
Tom Lyscio (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) took second in the weight throw with a toss of 49'3” (15.01m).
John Howard (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) was third in that event with a mark of 47'9” (14.56m). Later in the shot put, Howard would finish second at 43'10” (13.36m) and Lyscio third at 43'7.75” (13.30m).
In the long jump,
Alex Horoshak (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) was second with a leap of 20'10.75” (6.37m).
Peter Drinkwine (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) went on to win the triple jump with a distance of 42'11.75” (13.10m) and
Travis Ambuehl (Lake Linden, Mich./Lake Linden-Hubbell HS) won the pole vault with a meet and program record height of 14'2.75” (4.34m).
Luke Beckwith (Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS) was second in the pole vault, clearing 13'1.75” (4.01m).
In track events, the Saints would be victorious five times.
Samora Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI (UW-Whitewater)) won both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. His 200-meter winning time was 23.13 seconds, while his 400-meter time was 51.68 seconds.
Sherome Milon (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) was second in the 200-meters, posting a time of 23.18 seconds.
Justin Hanson (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City HS) won the 60-meter hurdles with a new meet record time of 8.65 seconds.
Christopher Doran (Royalton, Minn./Andover HS) was second with a time of 8.96 seconds and
Connor Stevens (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove HS) was third in 9.06 seconds.
The 4x200-meter relay team of
Addison Griffin (Superior, Wis./Superior HS (UW-River Falls)), Milon,
Ryan Guentzel (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) and
Steven Perry (Poplar, Wis./Northwestern HS (Minn.-Crookston)) won with a new meet and program record time of 1:32.81.
The final winner on the day for CSS was the distance medley relay team of
Tim Dunstan (Dollar Bay, Mich./Dollar Bay HS),
Braxton Ball (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS),
Ben Carlson (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS (Saint Mary’s)) and
Ryan Soule (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) who won a tight and exciting race with a time of 11:13.72.
Griffin set a new program record in the 60-meter dash, placing second with a time of 7.04 seconds. Carlson was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.53.
Charlie Habermann (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) was in an exciting Mile event, getting tangled up with Northwestern's runner in the final 20-meter to finish second with a time of 4:36.15.
Jimmy Linn (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) was third in a time of 4:45.60.
The Saints will have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships when they compete in the Pointer Qualifier, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, next Saturday. Action is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
