Men's Soccer Blanks Hamline for Second Straight Win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Harry Cook (Fareham, England/Henry Cort Community College) and Vasco Carneiro (Lisbon, Portugal/) scored, and Afonso Silva (Lisbon, Portugal/) made six saves as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team earned its second consecutive conference victory with a 2-0 win over Hamline on Wednesday at Pat Paterson Field.

The Saints improved to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Pipers fell to 3-4-3 overall and 0-2-2 in the conference.

Cook put St. Scholastica ahead just 7:18 into the match, scoring off an assist from Tim Bader (München, Germany/). The Saints continued to generate chances throughout the opening half, finishing with an 11-6 advantage in shots and forcing Hamline goalkeeper Alec Setterberg to make six saves before the break.

Silva answered with three first-half stops of his own, preserving the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Hamline increased its pressure after the break, outshooting the Saints 9-7 in the second half. Silva turned away a pair of attempts from AJ Jueseah early in the period before denying William Ferrufino in the 73rd minute to keep the Pipers off the scoreboard.

St. Scholastica nearly doubled its lead when Arturo Salgado-Trejo (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) hit the crossbar in the 78th minute. Carneiro provided the insurance goal at 81:57, scoring unassisted to give the Saints a two-goal cushion with just over eight minutes remaining.

The Saints finished with an 18-15 edge in shots, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Bader led St. Scholastica with four shots, while Carneiro and Louis Maerker (Essen, Germany/) each added three. Silva recorded three saves in each half to complete the shutout.

St. Scholastica played without head coach Barry Chastey, who was serving a suspension after receiving a red card in the Saints' previous game.

The Saints return home Thursday, Oct. 1, to host Central College in a nonconference matchup at Kenny Harkins Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
