PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team trailed by just one goal at halftime, but UW-Platteville scored five times after the break to defeat the Saints 6-0 in a nonconference matchup Tuesday.
CSS moved to 7-10-1 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 9-4-3.
UW-Platteville took an early lead when Westley Hankes scored off an assist from Justin Williams at the 3:34 mark. Andrew Wyland (St. Paul, MN/) kept the Saints within striking distance throughout the remainder of the half, making five saves as the Pioneers held an 11-1 advantage in shots.
Guilherme Marcondes Pereira (Sao Jose, Brazil/) recorded St. Scholastica's first attempt in the 36th minute, sending his shot wide left. Wyland added three saves over the final eight minutes of the half to keep the deficit at 1-0 heading into the break.
The Saints nearly equalized early in the second half when Daniel Durney (Winchester, England/) struck the crossbar at 48:37. UW-Platteville answered just 33 seconds later with an unassisted goal from Caden Wits.
Zac Monnett then scored twice in a span of 59 seconds, extending the Pioneers' lead to 4-0 at 54:09. Wits assisted on both goals, with Williams also earning an assist on the second.
Durney tested UW-Platteville goalkeeper Theodore Utz again in the 61st minute, but Utz made the save. Thomas Gaither converted a penalty kick at 65:18, and Holden Smith completed the scoring at 81:07 off an assist from Bryker Langfald.
Wyland finished with eight saves over 90 minutes. Durney led CSS with two shots, including its lone attempt on goal, while Marcondes Pereira added one shot. UW-Platteville finished with a 24-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
St. Scholastica returns home to close the regular season against No. 21 Saint John's on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3:30 p.m. at Kenny Harkins Field.
