Men’s Soccer Rallies Past Saint Mary’s for 2-1 MIAC Victory

WINONA, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica men's soccer team erased a halftime deficit with two goals in the opening six minutes of the second half to defeat Saint Mary's University 2-1 Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.

Saint Mary's struck first in the 41st minute when Than Soe scored off an assist from Francesco Cardone, sending the Cardinals into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

The Saints wasted little time changing the match after the break.

Just 1:02 into the second half, Daniel Durney (Winchester, England) pulled St. Scholastica level. Vasco Carneiro (Lisbon, Portugal/) set up Durney for his first goal of the season at 46:02, making it 1-1.

Less than five minutes later, Carneiro created another scoring opportunity. This time Tim Bader (München, Germany/) finished it at 50:29 for his second goal of the season, putting the Saints ahead 2-1.

St. Scholastica continued to generate opportunities after taking the lead. Harry Cook (Fareham, England/Henry Cort Community College) and Durney each forced saves from Saint Mary's goalkeeper Bode Jacobsen in the 59th minute, while Kiki Schmitz (Meerbusch, Germany/) and Carneiro also put second-half attempts on frame.

The match became increasingly physical down the stretch. Saint Mary's was reduced to 10 players following a red card in the 75th minute, while St. Scholastica also went down a player in the 83rd. The Cardinals produced several late chances, but goalkeeper Afonso Silva (Lisbon, Portugal/) made three saves over the final nine minutes to preserve the Saints' advantage.

Silva finished with six saves in the victory.

Bader led St. Scholastica with five shots, including four on goal, while Durney recorded three attempts and put two on frame. Carneiro assisted on both Saints goals.

The teams finished even with 13 shots apiece, but St. Scholastica held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The victory improved St. Scholastica to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in MIAC play, while Saint Mary's fell to 0-7-1 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
