DULUTH, Minn. – Parker Chastey (Duluth, MN/Denfeld HS) converted a penalty kick in the final second of regulation Tuesday night, lifting the St. Scholastica men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Carleton College in the Saints' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener at Kenny Harkins Field.
The loss was Carleton's first of the season, dropping the Knights to 3-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in MIAC play.
With the match tied 1-1 and the final seconds ticking away, St. Scholastica made one final push into the Carleton penalty area. A foul was called in the box as time expired, and after the officials conferred, one second was put back on the clock and the Saints were awarded a penalty kick.
Chastey stepped to the spot and delivered, beating Carleton goalkeeper Ethan Saucedo to give the Saints the 2-1 victory and a memorable start to conference play.
Carleton had controlled much of the opening half and took the lead in the 29th minute when Oscar Gates found the back of the net. The Knights outshot the Saints 10-3 over the first 45 minutes and carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
St. Scholastica responded quickly after the break. In the 50th minute, Vasco Carneiro (Lisbon, Portugal/) scored the equalizer off an assist from Chastey, leveling the match at 1-1. The Saints generated considerably more pressure after halftime, earning all six of their corner kicks in the second half, including five during a stretch of less than seven minutes early in the period.
Carleton continued to create chances, but goalkeeper Afonso Silva (Lisbon, Portugal/) kept the Saints even with four second-half saves. He finished the night with five saves as the Knights held an 18-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
St. Scholastica will remain at home for its next MIAC contest, hosting Macalester College on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m. at Kenny Harkins Field.
