Baseball Unable to Overcome Big Frames in Losses at Saint John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica baseball team dropped both games of a MIAC doubleheader at Saint John's on Wednesday, falling 17–1 in the opener before a 10–3 decision in game two.

Saint John's set the tone early in game one, scoring four runs in the second inning and adding three more in the third to take control. The Johnnies continued to build the lead with a six-run fifth and four-run sixth, finishing with 17 runs on 15 hits.

The Saints' lone run came in the second inning, as Tyler Tiedeman (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran HS) delivered an RBI single to score Max Israel (Cottage Grove, Minn./Hill-Murray HS). Tiedeman finished with two hits and an RBI, while Tommy Crupi (Gilbert, AZ/San Tan Charter) also recorded a pair of hits.

St. Scholastica collected six hits in the game but struck out nine times and was unable to generate sustained offense. On the mound, Logan Price (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon HS) took the loss, while the Saints used five pitchers in the contest.

In game two, the Saints jumped in front early, taking a 1–0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Markus Isaiah (Centralia, IL/Centralia HS). They added two more in the fourth to briefly tie the game at 3–3, capitalizing on defensive miscues by Saint John's.

However, the Johnnies responded with a decisive seven-run fourth inning, taking advantage of multiple errors to break the game open. Despite being limited to nine hits, Saint John's scored 10 runs, with just two earned, as the Saints committed four errors in the field.

Isaiah drove in a run, while Kellan Graning (Becker, Minn./Becker HS) added an RBI single and Andrew Beffel (Highlands Ranch, CO/Mountain Vista HS) brought in a run on a sacrifice bunt. Markus Isaiah (Centralia, IL/Centralia HS), Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)), Tommy Crupi (Gilbert, AZ/San Tan Charter), and Gus Swenson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) each recorded stolen bases as the Saints looked to generate offense.

After the fourth inning, the Saints' pitching staff settled in, holding Saint John's scoreless over the final five innings, but the offense was unable to close the gap.

St. Scholastica will return to action Saturday with a MIAC doubleheader at St. Olaf, and will also look to complete the suspended game at Carleton if conditions allow.
