Baseball Salvages Split Behind Stoeckle Shutout, Tamayo-Vera’s Big Day

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team split its home-opening doubleheader with Augsburg on Tuesday at Wade Stadium, dropping game one 4–1 before responding with a 10–0 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Saints jumped out to an early lead in their first at-bats at Wade. Markus Isaiah (Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) singled and stole second before Max Israel (Cottage Grove, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) drove him in with an RBI single to make it 1–0. Augsburg answered with a three-run second inning to take control and added a run in the seventh for the 4–1 final.

St. Scholastica totaled seven hits in game one, with Isaiah and Israel each recording two. The Saints threatened in the fifth inning by loading the bases but were unable to push across another run.

The Saints bounced back in a big way in game two, breaking through in the third inning when Luke Krull (Greenville, WI/Xavier HS) doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Damian Tamayo-Vera. St. Scholastica extended the lead with two runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Israel.

The decisive blow came in the sixth, as Tamayo-Vera delivered a three-run double with two outs to stretch the lead to 6–0. The Saints added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run pinch-hit single from Kellan Graning (Becker, Minn./Becker HS) and another RBI from Tamayo-Vera.

Tamayo-Vera led the offensive surge, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs, while the Saints piled up 15 hits in the game. Krull, Isaiah and Israel each added two hits.

On the mound, Jonathan Stoeckle (Fresno, CA/Clovis West HS) turned in a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out four to earn the win.

Tamayo-Vera, who currently leads the MIAC in batting average and was recently named MIAC Player of the Week, continued his strong stretch at the plate with his five-RBI performance in the nightcap.

With the split, the Saints move to 14–12 overall and 4–6 in MIAC play. Up next, they'll travel to Saint Mary's on Saturday for a doubleheader in Winona, Minnesota.
