DULUTH, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica softball team opened its home schedule on Saturday against Augsburg, falling 8–3 in game one before game two was suspended due to rain in the first inning with the Saints holding a 3–0 lead.
In the opener, Augsburg used a big third inning to take control and never trailed. After two scoreless frames to begin the game, the Auggies broke through with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run, and added two more in the fourth to build a 5–2 advantage. Augsburg continued to add on late, finishing with 15 hits in the 8–3 decision.
St. Scholastica answered in the third inning, cutting into the deficit with a two-run double from Abigail Gooden (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunderridge HS) that scored Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS) and Adie Potratz (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS). Gooden finished with a team-high three RBIs, going 2-for-4 at the plate, including a pair of doubles. Ernst also recorded two hits and scored a run, while Payton Lang (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville South HS) added a hit as the Saints totaled six hits in the contest.
Aleah Shogren (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS) took the loss in the circle, working all seven innings.
Game two was cut short due to rain after just one inning, but the Saints came out with early energy. St. Scholastica plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS) and Abigail Gooden (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunderridge HS) each reaching and scoring, and Payton Lang (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville South HS) delivering a two-RBI single. Kaylei Greene (San Bernardino, CA/Summit HS) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly as the Saints took a 3–0 lead before the weather halted play.
Bailey Ellison (Chaska, MN/Chaska HS) struck out two in a scoreless top of the first inning prior to the suspension.
