Saint Peter, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team traveled south to Gustavus Adolphus College, to play the Gusties in the second of a two-game MIAC Conference series. Today's game saw the Gusties take the win tonight, splitting the weekend with a 4-0 final.
How it Happened
First Period
The opening period saw the Saints down a skater roughly 30 seconds into the period. While on the penalty kill, the Saints were able to effectively shut down any Gustavus offense, limiting them to just two shots on net, after a number of successful zone clearings.
As time went on, the Saints had difficulty finding offensive momentum, only attempting a handful of shots in the first 20 minutes. But the Saints defense was there. Even though the Saints were outshot by the Gusties, the defense made it a notable challenge or the opposition to find a shooting chance.
The first goal of the night game late in the period, with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period, Gustavus was the first on the board, ultimately closing the period with a 1-0 lead.
Second Period
Period two was similar to the first, the Saints strong on defense, and Gusties powering on offense. Much like the first period, the Saints were called on a penalty relatively early in the second, just four-and-a-half minutes in. While on this penalty kill, the Saints did there best on defense, stopping eight total shots, before the ninth found its way to the back of the net, giving Gustavus a two-goal lead.
The second went on with not much back-and-forth, when either the Saints or Gusties had possession, it was largely sustained in their respective offensive zones, giving each team opportunities to score.
The second goal of the period came much later, at 18:45, another goal from the Gusties, extending the deficit to three, and closing the period at 3-0.
Third Period
The final 20 followed the same pattern as the first two periods, strong Gustie offense met with strong and resilient Saints defense. The third period was more even than the last two, with the Saints only getting outshot by one (8-9), but that one proved to be enough.
The majority of the period remained scoreless, with both teams going back and forth, exchanging a few shots, and moving the puck o find a good position. The third remained scoreless until around the 18th minute, when the Gusties scored the final goal of the night, and empty-net goal, to close the game4-0.
