Saint Paul, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team traveled to the state capital, Saint Paul, Minn., today, February 20, to play the first of a two-game series against the Wildcats of Saint Catherine's University. Tonight's MIAC Conference contest saw the Saints calim the overtime conference win less than a minute into the extra period, 2-1.
How it Happened
First Period
The opening frame of tonight's game saw the Saints and Wildcats displaying aggressive play on both sides of the puck. The Wildcats outshot the Saints in the first 9-6, but that did not reflect the play on the ice; the Saints recorded more total shots in the period (12-11) than the Wildcats.
The first period came to a close with a 0-0 stalemate, but the Saints found themselves on a power play, with one minute overlapping into the second period.
Second Period
Period two had the Saints open on a power play. With only a minute remaining on this advantage, it was difficult for the Saints to capitalize on this advantage, and so the penalty was successfully killed off by the Wildcats.
The scoreless draw did not last long in the second, as only seven-and-a-half seconds into the period, Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, MN/Kasson-Mantorville HS) recorded the Saints' first goal of the game, coming off an assist from Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS).
Up 1-0, the Saints made an effort to maintain their newfound lead, which they did. Even battling through two penalties, the Saints managed to close the second period with a one-goal lead.
Third Period
The final period of regulation was another back-and-forth affair, with each team attempting 14 shots in total throughout the period.
The third period did not remain scoreless for long as the Wildcats went on to score their first and only goal of the night, a little over four minutes into the period, tying the game at 1-1.
The Saints tried to mount an offense to regain their lead before the final horn sounded, concluding regulation play, but they were unable to. The game would end in a 1-1 draw before going to a three-on-three overtime period
Overtime
The overtime period of tonight's game was quick. The Wildcats took possession off the opening face off followed quickly by a shot from Sophie Parendo (Proctor, MN/Proctor HS) that was saved by the Wildcats goaltender.
The Wildcats then took the puck down the ice and attempted a shot of their own that was brought in my Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, MN/Grand Rapids HS), before Bailey Coole (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) stole the puck from the Wildcats offense, skated it down, passed it to herself along the boards, and beat the goaltender on the glove side to secure the Saints win.
