SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Local and regional track and field talent met up in Superior on Valentine's Day to continue progressing towards conference championship weekend. The MIAC, NSIC, UMAC, and WIAC were all represented at UW-Superior's Maday Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Anthony Mahowald (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) kicked off the action on Saturday on the runway. Mahowald took the long jump competition by storm and secured his victory with his final jump of the day. Mahowald won by over a foot with his best jump of 6.70m.
Continuing his record breaking streak,
Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) again crossed the bridge to set new standards for local sprinters. Starting the day with a meet record in the 400m dash, Kubicek broke the tape in a winning time of 49.41 seconds.
Not satisfied with his first effort, Kubicek returned in the 200m dash to set yet another meet record with his finishing time of 22.39 seconds. However, this record tasted a bit sweeter as it set the new St. Scholastica school record in the event. This record was previously held by Saints All-American Samuel Eben Ebai at 22.40 seconds.
Connor Feldt (Buhl, MN/Mountain Iron-Buhl High School) found a meet record of his own from a gutsy victory in the 1000m. Feldt won the race in a time of 2:33.45. This catapulted Feldt up to the number five slot on the Saints all-time list.
Fresh off of a school record performance,
Spencer Strohm (Barnum/Barnum High School) only had one shot with a one and done final in the 60m hurdles. Strohm crushed the competition with a winning time of 8.48 seconds.
Josh Monreal added to his win tally on the year with another solid showing in the weight throw. Monreal won the competition with a heave of 17.35m.
Mason Sundquist (Cloquet, MN/Cloquet HS) grabbed runner-up honors in the shot put with a toss of 13.90m. Monreal was inches behind with a third place finish with a best throw of 13.72m.
In the 60m dash,
Carter O'Bey (Alborn, Minn./Alborn HS) punched his ticket to the final after taking fourth in the prelim with a time of 7.18 seconds. O'Bey moved up to finish third overall in the final and matched his personal record of 7.17 seconds.
O'Bey also finished runner up in the 200m dash with a time of 23.35 seconds.
Ashton Niemi (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) placed third in the 1000m with a personal best time of 2:37.50.
Trevor Turner took home the bronze in the high jump with a leap of 1.80m.
The Saints have one more meet to finalize their qualification marks for the MIAC Championships. The final regular season meet lands next Friday at St. Olaf College. The MIAC Indoor Championships take place on February 27th and 28th at Carleton College.
