NORTHFIELD, MN --
The 16th ranked St. Scholastica men's track and field team appeared in a two-day invitational in Northfield over the weekend. After introducing the season with some smaller, local meets, the team headed to MIAC-foe St. Olaf to face off against conference, in-state, and out-of-state competition. Carleton, Gustavus, Macalester, Martin Luther, Minnesota Morris, North Central, St. Mary's, St. Olaf, and UW-River Falls came together to pack one of the finest indoor facilities in the midwest on Friday evening and through Saturday.
Friday's highlight came in the form of yet another back and fourth school record trade off between
Joshua Monreal (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and
Trent Beseth (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS). After owning the school record for a total of two weeks, Monreal solidified himself as a rising star with his third week in a row eclipsing the 18 meter mark. However, it was Beseth who took the record this week. Beseth uncorked a mammoth toss of 18.60m to propel himself to the top of the MIAC rankings. Both throwers continue to pave a path to nationals.
Beseth returned on Saturday to claim a double title with a win in the shot put. Beseth won the competition by nearly three meters to remain undefeated in the event this season. Beseth's best throw of the day went 17.41m.
Anthony Mahowald (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) returned to action with a runner-up finish in the long jump. Mahowald's best mark on the day went 6.64m. In a feat of consistency all six of Mahowald's jumps were marked within one foot of each other.
First year standout
Spencer Strohm (Barnum/Barnum High School) continued to make his mark in his debut season for the Saints on Saturday. In the 60m hurdle prelims, Strohm won his heat decisively with a new personal best mark of 8.42 seconds. This time also crowned Strohm as the new fastest hurdler in school history, sneaking by Saints Hall of Famer and All-American Kevin Wagner's previous record of 8.42 seconds.
Strohm returned in the 60m hurdle final with a new sense of pride and determination. Beating the field to hurdle one off of the gun, Strohm caught fire with each barrier. Separating himself from his competitors over the back half of the race, Strohm broke the tape in 8.37 seconds to better his school record and rank him second in the MIAC.
Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) took home another pair of victories on the track on Saturday. In the 400m dash, Kubicek won handily with a time of 49.44 seconds. In the 200m dash, Kubicek exploded to a huge personal best time in 22.45 seconds. This time is only .05 seconds off of Saints All-American Samuel Eben Ebai's school record.
Carter O'Bey (Alborn, Minn./Alborn HS) won his qualifying heat in the 60m dash in a time of 7.26 seconds. In the final, O'Bey shot out of the blocks to a personal best time of 7.17 seconds and a third place finish. This time ties O'Bey as the nine fastest Saint of all time in the discipline.
Jeffrey Kayfes (Buhl, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS) led a trio of Saints to a 2-3-4 finish in the 600m dash. His time of 1:26.53 was just shy of his personal best.
Zachary Bartsch (Plymouth, MN/Totino Grace) and
Joel Bouley (Zimmerman, MN/Zimmerman HS) both finished in personal best times to finish third (1:26.59) and fourth (1:27.49).
The Saints head back up to Duluth with more conference qualifiers and movement on the school record lists. The team will focus on a final push with training over the next two weeks, while taking a break from competing next weekend. See the Saints back in action in Superior on February 14th.
