St. Peter, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Men's soccer team travelled to southern Minn. to play in their first MIAC Conference game of the season, against the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College. Today's outing ended with the Gusties taking the victory over the Saints, 6-1.
How it Happened
First half
The opening half saw the Saints pushed onto the defensive end, with goalkeeper Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) standing tall and making key stops, including a save in the 18th minute to keep the Saints in it. Despite Gustavus striking early, the Saints continued to fight for possession and tightened up defensively as the half wore on, heading into the break ready to respond.
Second Half
That response came in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Ted Barker (Huntingdon, England/) gave the Saints their breakthrough, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season to cut into the Gusties' lead and swing momentum back to St. Scholastica. The goal energized the Saints, who followed with more attacking pressure and a shot on frame from Sami Kaestle (Buchrain, Switzerland/) in the 65th minute.
Hallberg remained active, adding five saves in the second half before giving way to Afonso Silva (Lisbon, Portugal/), who came in to close the match and contributed two more saves in relief.
What's Next
The Saints (0-4-3, 0-1 MIAC) will travel south to Collegeville, Minn. to face off against another MIAC Conference opponent, the Johnnies (4-1-2, 0-1 MIAC). This conference match will take place on Monday, September 22 at 2 P.M.
