After a momentous day one set the tone for the weekend, the track and field team had a thrilling day two of championships on their plate. With the remainder of the field events on the schedule, along with the running event finals that had their fields set on Friday, the Saints came ready to continue their momentum from day one.Â
Starting off the action for the Saints was Matthew Erickson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) in the triple jump. With his best jump of the season, Erickson was able to qualify for the final. Erickson would end up finishing ninth overall with a mark of 13.25m.
After a heroic day one for Josh Monreal in the throwing ring, the podium called his name yet again on Saturday. This time around in the shot put, Monreal unleashed the biggest throw of his life when he needed it most. On his fifth and penultimate attempt, Monreal sent the shot 15.12m to catapult up the rankings from eighth to third to secure the bronze. This was the second All-MIAC honor for the sophomore over the weekend.Â
The first running event on the day was the 4x100m relay. The team of Carter O'Bey (Alborn, Minn./Alborn HS), Sean Alfaro Diedrich (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), Derek Douglas (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba HS), and Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) executed near-perfect handoffs to get the stick around smoothly for Kubicek to finish the job. The team crossed the line in 42.65 seconds to finish first in their heat and fifth overall in the MIAC. This performance was good for an All-MIAC honorable mention nod, and was also the third fastest mark in school history.Â
Next on the track for the Saints was Kubicek in the 400m dash. In a race that would see the fastest two times in MIAC history, as well as the #1 and #2 marks in all of NCAA Division III, Kubicek hit the line in fourth place with a new school record time of 48.40 seconds. This added another All-MIAC honorable mention to Kubicek's resume.Â
Kubicek continued his marathon day in the 200m final, dipping into the points once again to finish in eight place with a time of 22.19 seconds.Â
In the 5000m final, Lars DeWall toed the line hopeful for a tactical endeavor. The race unfolded on a platter for him with a pedestrian first 2km. With tired legs from a monster 1500m race the day before, DeWall hung tight while the field clustered up with timid leaders through the halfway point in the race. When a few finally broke the race open, he was a snake in the grass with a stoic grin. Immediately separating themselves from the field, six turned to four, and four into two. With enough gas in the tank to blow away the field, Lars DeWall caught all but one to manage a triumphant runner-up finish in a pure racers race. DeWall's second place finish locked up yet another All-MIAC season for the graduating senior.Â
Wrapping up the action for the Saints was the 4x400m relay team of Alfaro-Diedrich, Douglas, Zach Bartsch, and Kubicek. The squad had a messy task on their hands with challenging teams vying for their final chance at points. With all four legs digging to the bottom of the barrel, each leg ran a personal best split to combine for the fastest Saints 4x4 in school history. The team garnered All-MIAC honorable mention accolades with their fifth place finish. Their time of 3:19.08 is the first time a St. Scholastica team has eclipsed the elusive 3:20 mark, which they hit in each of the last three seasons.Â
The action isn't quite over for the season, as nationals looms in the distance. A number of competitors will take one last stab at an NCAA mark at LaCrosse's last chance qualifier on May 15th.Â
