Saints Outpaced by Cobbers in Doubleheader Defeat

Moorhead, MN - The Saints softball team took on the Cobbers of Moorhead College this afternoon in an away double header matchup. The Saints ultimately got swept both games, despite a homerun from Katelyn Hackman (Oakdale, MN/Tartan High School).

Game One: CSS 0, Concordia College 8

The Cobbers of Concordia College got off on the upswing in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs of a homer and a single for an early 2-0 lead.

They went on to tack on an additional run in the bottom of the second, extending the lead to 3-0.

On the other side, the Saints struggled in the first game to register vital hits to keep them in the game.

In the bottom of the third, the Cobbers added an additional three runs to the tally with two more homers, making it 6-0.

The Saints gained a bit of momentum in the fourth, with Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) registering the first hit for them.

However, the strength of the Cobbers ended up being too much, as the opposition scored the final two runs in the fifth and last inning to claim an 8-0 win over the Saints.

Game Two: CSS 4, Concordia College 7

Concordia began the second game with the same intensity, scoring the fourth homer of the day to claim another early 2-0 lead.

This time it was different for the Saints, however, as Hackman went on to match them by hitting a homer herself to cut back their lead to 2-1.

The Cobbers didn't give up, and matched Hackman in the bottom of the second with a single bunt, extending the lead to 3-1.

Scholastica went on a scoring frenzy in the top of the fourth inning, gaining great momentum and setting the tone.

Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) doubled to right center, allowing Victoria Nelson (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi High School) and Callie Casura (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial High School) to score, deadlocking the game at 3-3.

Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) finished the play by singling down the left field line, sending Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) home to take over a 4-3 lead over the Cobbers.

Unfortunately for the Saints, the Cobbers had one final push in the bottom of the seventh. They scored once more off a single, and three more runs after that due to another homer for a 7-4 win over the Saints.

Up Next - The Saints (10-22, 6-10) have their next double header on Saturday, April 26 against the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in St. Joseph, MN.
