Saints Bested in Final Games of Florida Trip

Bartow, FL - The Saint Scholastica softball team wrapped up their Spring Games in Florida with their final double header yesterday. They competed against Curry College and Ohio Northern University, which both ultimately ended in defeats.

Game One: CSS 0, Curry College 8

Hackman got the first game underway with a double to left center, but the Saints hitters could not capitalize on her efforts. The Colonels of Curry College registered three single hits and a sacrifice fly, tallying four runs for a 0-4 lead in the first inning.

The Saints, unable to get a hit in the second inning, locked down the Colonels in the outfield to stay in the game. Hackman and freshman Anna Azure (Brooklyn Park, MN/Osseo High School) each tallied single hits in the third, but were not able to advance.

A single up the middle from Ernst in the fourth wasn't enough for a run, as the Colonels added another from a single hit to center field, advancing their third base runner to home for a 0-5 lead.

The Colonels outfield locked down the Saints in the fifth inning, and added to their tally more with a single hit and two unearned runs due to an error by the Saints second baseman to close the game with a score of 0-8.

Game Two: CSS 6, Ohio Northern College 13

The Polar Bears of Ohio Northern College started off strong with a run in the first inning after a runner advancing from a fielders' choice, pushing through home plate for a 0-1 lead. The Saints responded quickly, as Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) singled to left center, allowing Katelyn Hackman (Oakdale, MN/Tartan High School) to put the game in a 1-1 deadlock.

In the second inning, the Saints locked down in the outfield to deny the Polar Bears another lead. Maddie Glienke capitalized on a single from Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS), taking a 2-1 lead.

However, the Polar Bears kicked it into gear in the third inning. The opposition hit a double to kick it off, as three runners crossed home to reclaim a 2-4 lead. A single hit then gave them an additional run, followed by two unearned runs due to an error on second base, making the score 2-7. Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) was able to salvage a run in the third due to a wild throw, cutting their lead to 3-7.

The Polar Bears went on to tally another run in the top of the fourth from a single, but was matched by Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), who registered a run off a single from Paniagua to make the score 4-8.

In the fifth inning, the Polar Bears were not finished quite yet. They scored three more runs to take a 3-11 lead, all off of single hits. Glienke didn't give up, scoring off an error by their shortstop. Laviano went on to score an additional run off a fielder's choice, slashing the deficit to 6-11.

Scoring two more runs off a single and a walk, the Polar Bears increased their lead for a final score of 6-13 in the sixth inning to claim a victory over the Saints.

Up Next - The Saints (4-10, 0-0) will travel to compete against University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday, March 29 for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
