Three Saints have punched their ticket to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships this weekend in Rockchester, New York. First up for the Saints will be junior
Trent Beseth (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) in the shot put at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. Beseth recently received MIAC Field Athlete of the Year honors and currently has the best throw in the nation at 18.29m. He faces a tough field with the next longest throw behind him coming from Wis.-Eau Claire senior Adam Strouf at 18.15m. Beseth has a chance to become the first national champion in program history on the men's side.
The on track action for the Saints will start on Friday at 1:35 p.m. when
Calvin Boone (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS), the Saints outstanding graduate student, will step up to the line in the prelims of the men's one mile run. While not typical for that distance in a collegiate setting, the national championships does require athletes to conquer a round of prelims before advancing to the final in that event. Boone currently sits in 16th place in the field with a season best time of 4:10.93. The leading time in the nation is a 4:02.22 from MIT senior Ziyad Hassan.
The Saints third and final athlete competing at the national championships,
Lars Dewall (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), will have to await until Saturday afternoon for his chance to claim All-American status. He will be competing in the 3,000m run at 4:40 p.m. Currently, Dewall sits in 16th place in the field with a season best time of 8:15.68. The best time in the field comes from Lynchburg junior Chasen Hunt with an 8:02.46 season best.
