Duluth, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team hosted the #9 ranked Johnnies from Saint John's University this evening at the Reif Gymnasium. The Johnnies were able to take an early lead over CSS, taking a 22-point lead into the halftime break. While the Saints were able to score 10 more points offensively in the second half, the Johnnies came away victorious in this contest by a score of 100-66.
How it Happened
First Half
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater High School) scored the first basket for the Saints early in the half, but the Johnnies jumped out to a quick run, leading 15-2.
Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) and Bryce Shoto (Owego, Il./Oswego East High School) got their nights started with the duo earning points, but the Saints trailed 23-6.
Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)) and Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) both got their points midway through the half, with Overstreet knocking down a jumper and Nelson drilling a three-pointer.
Moments later, Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) scored on back-to-back possessions in the post, but the Johnnies were still holding a 22-point lead.
After Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) got a jumper to fall, Thomson scored twice from the three-point line over the next minute and a half, bringing the score to 44-26.
Drelyn Jones (Leyden, Il./Leyden High School) knocked down a pair of free throws to end the half for CSS, as the Johnnies held a 50-28 lead at the halftime break.
Second Half
The Saints got jumpers from Overstreet and Jones to kickoff the second half for the Saints, but the Johnnies continued to expand their lead.
At the 13:35 mark, Nelson was able to convert an and-one, followed by a three-pointer from Shoto, bringing the score to 66-38.
Nelson was able to make all three of his free throw attempts after being fouled on a three-point attempt to cut the Saints deficit to 25 points.
Overstreet got a smooth finish on a jumper at the nine minute mark after being fouled, and converted the free throw to complete the three-point play.
In the late stages of the half, Jones and Keykal both got layups to fall, followed by a Nelson three-pointer, as the score sat at 84-55.
Late in the half, Drey Wisdom (Oswego, Il./Oswego East High School) knocked down a three-pointer and converted an and-one to add to his point total, as well as Ben Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy) scoring on a layup, but the Johnnies came away on top by a score of 100-66 in tonight's contest.
