SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Saints Track and Field traveled across the bridge to take on regional competition at University of Wisconsin – Superior. University of Wisconsin – River Falls, Northwestern University, and University of Minnesota – Duluth were also in attendance. The event kicked off with a memorial to remember Sam Maday, a well-respected member of the Twin Ports track and field community, who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. The event is named the Maday Classic in his honor.

Trent Beseth (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) stuck to his winning ways with another monster performance on Saturday. Beseth won the shot put handily with a throw of 17.45m (57-03.00). So far, Beseth has won MIAC athlete of the week honors for all four previous competitions he has taken place in this year. This throw gives Beseth a fair shot at going five for five.

Josh Monreal finished fourth in the same event with a toss of 14.98m (49-01.75). The two came back in the weight throw to finish second and third overall. Beseth edged out his teammate with a throw of 17.32m (56-10.00). Monreal unleashed the farthest throw of his career with a mark of 17.20m (56-05.25). This throw moves Monreal all the way up to third overall on the Saints all-time list as well.

Sophomore Matthew Erickson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) returned to the sand to place runner-up in the long jump.

Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) ran to a second place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 50.27 seconds.

Ashton Niemi (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) navigated a busy track to move into second place in the final laps of the 1000m run. Niemi
finished with a personal best time of 2:40.05.

In the single lap race, Sean Alfaro Diedrich (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) torched the outside lane to finish in second place. His 200m
clocking of 23.23 is the fastest indoor time in Alfaro Diedrich's career.

The Saints capped the day off with a commanding victory in the 4x400m relay. Alfaro Diedrich started the relay off and got the team into the lead right off the break. Derek Douglas (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba HS) and Nathan Neu (Ortonville, Minn./Ortonville HS) continued to stretch out the lead for Kubicek in the anchor postion. Kubicek hit the line in 3:29.65 with an eight second margin of victory.
