DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica Track and Field hosted its lone home meet of the season over the weekend. The Burn's Wellness Commons set the stage for Lakehead University, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Wisconsin River Falls, and the University of Wisconsin Superior to open up their seasons after a full fall of preparation.
Trent Beseth (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), Jeffrey Kayfes (Buhl, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS), and Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) received a senior-send off in appreciation of their commitment to the team over the years. These graduating seniors made the most of their final appearance on their home turf.
Beseth wasted no time revving up a record breaking season in the throwing circle. In the weight throw, his less-preferred of the indoor disciplines, he unleashed a final throw of 18.37m (60-3.25) to shatter his personal best, the meet record, as well as the facility record. This mark is currently ranked #5 in NCAA Division III. Beseth was followed closely by junior teammate Joshua Monreal's (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) all-time best toss of 17.44m (57-02.75). Monreal sits at #15 in the country. Sophomore Mason Sundquist (Cloquet, MN/Cloquet HS) rounded out the top five with a personal best throw of his own. Sundquist's farthest on the day went 15.44m (50-08.00) to eclipse the 50ft mark for the first time.
Beseth didn't call it a day there. He strung together a high class series of throws in the shot put with his best two attempts clearing the 18 meter mark. Beseth's winning toss of 18.12m (59-05.50) is ranked atop the NCAA DIII list and #19 among all college divisions. Sundquist also backed up his first result with another fifth place finish in the shot put. He achieved yet another personal best with his throw of 13.83m (45-04.50).
Another senior in the spotlight was Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) in the 400m dash. Kubicek claimed victory in the two-lap affair with a winning time of 50.39 seconds. He was followed by fellow Saints Finn Eskeli (Hibbing, MN/Hibbing High School) and Kieran Allison (Cologne, MN/Central High School), who placed third and fourth with times of 53.69 and 54.89 seconds.
Kubicek rallied for a seventh place finish in the 200m with a new indoor personal record of 22.84 seconds.
The final senior to capitalize on his final efforts in front of the home crowd was Jeffrey Kayfes (Buhl, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS) in the 600m dash. Kayfes won his heat and placed fourth overall after cashing in on a five-second personal record of 1:26.40.
Spencer Strohm (Barnum/Barnum High School) made his debut for the Saints with a third place finish in the 60m hurdles. Strohm's time of 8.58 seconds is the fourth best performance in the event in school history.
Anthony Mahowald (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) picked up right where he left off last season with a runner-up finish in the long jump. Mahowald's best leap of the day was 6.71m (22-00.25). Strohm also finished second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.85m (6-00.75).
Team activity is on pause for finals and semester break until January 7th. The Saints head across the bridge on January 17th to resume their meet schedule for the 2026 season.
