Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team hosted the Auggies of Augsburg University in the second of a two-game series, coming off a 2-1 shootout victory for the Saints last night. Tonight's contest played out differently than last nights, and saw the Auggies take a dominant 6-1 victory over the Saints.
How it Happened
First Period
The Saints opened the game with immediate energy. Alaina Hedberg (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS), Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS), and Greta Culshaw-Klein (Maplewood, MN/Tartan HS) all put shots on goal in the opening minutes, testing Augsburg's goaltender early.
Defensively, the Saints held firm. Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, MN/Grand Rapids HS) made several sharp saves to keep the game scoreless through the early stages. Blocks from Kendra Royer (Duluth, MN/Duluth Marshall HS), Katie Sandelin (Hermantown, MN/Hermantown HS), and Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) helped keep Augsburg to the perimeter.
Augsburg broke through at 9:15, but the Saints responded with more pressure. Morgan Mitchell (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS), Suzi Vidmar (Boise, Idaho./Timberline HS), Hanley Block (Alexandria, MN/Alexandria HS), and Parendo each forced saves in the final 10 minutes, while Cole continued to stand tall with multiple point-blank stops. CSS finished the period with 11 shots and only trailed 1–0 after a strong opening frame.
Second Period
St. Scholastica started the second period winning faceoffs and generating possession. Nelson, Culshaw-Klein, Vidmar, and Royer all registered shots within the first seven minutes as the Saints maintained momentum.
Cole remained a defensive anchor, turning away a barrage of Augsburg attempts from 0:15 to 8:47, including glove saves and rebound control that kept the Saints within one.
Augsburg added goals at 9:50 and 14:52, but the Saints immediately answered with more push. Sophie Parendo (Proctor, MN/Proctor HS) fired a shot on goal at 15:29, and the Saints offense created multiple looks on a late-period power play as Coole, Nelson, and the Saints' puck movement forced Augsburg into its deepest defensive posture of the night.
By the end of the second, the Saints had held Augsburg scoreless on the power play and continued to build offensive pace.
Third Period
The Saints came out fast in the third, with Hanley Block (Alexandria, MN/Alexandria HS) generating two early shots before Augsburg extended its lead on a power play at 1:33.
The Saints quickly answered with their first goal of the night as Parendo was able to feed the puck to Mitchell just over five minutes into the period, closing the gap to three goals.
The Saints kept the intensity high, with additional shots from Sandelin, Nelson, and Vidmar, supported by defensive blocks from Parendo, Culshaw-Klein, Blattner, and Chapman. Cole continued making big saves throughout, finishing with 38 stops on the night.
Augsburg added two more even-strength goals midway through the frame, but the Saints continued to battle, finishing strong with late-period shots and a final defensive stand in the closing seconds.
