Superior, Wis. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team stayed close to home when they traveled to Superior, Wis., today, November 25 to compete in a non-conference game against the Yellowjackets of the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Tonight's non-conference rivalry game saw the Saints bringing home the 3-2 victory over the Yellowjackets in a thrilling fashion.
How it Happened
First Period
The Saints wasted no time lighting up the board as only 53 seconds into the game, Alaina Hedburg found herself with the puck open in front of the Superior goaltender and skillfully netted the shot.
Following Hedburgs goal, both teams went toe-to-toe with shots and saves. It took the Saints only thirteen-and-a-half minutes to extend their lead to two. Jane Eckstrom (Proctor, MN/Proctor HS) found Bailey Coole (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) who took a shot that was initially stopped, but Kendra Royer (Duluth, MN/Duluth Marshall HS) was there for the tip, and the rebound goal.
The Saints two goals were not the only netted before the first 20 came to a close. With just over five minutes remaining in the period, the Yellowjackets brought the gap to within one, recording one assist with their goal. The first period came to a close with the Saints attempting five more shots compared to the Yellowjackets three.
Second Period
The scoring halted for the second frame of action in tonight's match. Fortunately for the Saints, they opened the second period on the power play. On this power play, they managed to attempt three total shots, two of which were caught up in the defense, the other was stopped by the goaltender.
Moving through the period, both teams maintained a similar level of shooting output, the Saints attempted 12, compared to the Yellowjackets' 15.
With just over two minutes remaining in the period, the Saints suffered their second penalty of the game. With good penalty killers on the ice, the Saints were able to kill off this Yellowjacket penalty, allowing the second period to end with the score remaining 2-1.
Third Period
The Saints started the third period with an early penalty in the corner. During this penalty, the Saints faced four total shots with only two of them landing on net. Both teams went neck and neck with each other following the penalty, attempting a total of three shots each.
The Saints found the back of the net once more when Gabby Gamst (Moose Lake, MN/Moose Lake HS) got the puck from Eckstrom, who tallied her second assist of the might, and found the back of the net over the shoulder of the Yellowjacket goaltender giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.
It did not take long for the Yellowjackets to retaliate. Just a little over a minute later, the Yellowjackets were able to net their second goal of the game, cutting the lead to one goal with a minute remaining in the game.
As the time wound down, the Saints were able to maintain their lead as the seconds ticked down, ending the rivalry with the Saints taking the win home.
