DULUTH, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica men's soccer team tied Hamline University in a 2-2 draw in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Harkins Field.
The Saints saw goals from freshman midfielder Louis Maerker (Essen, Germany/), who scored in the 55th minute to equalize, and freshman midfielder Vasco Carneiro (Lisbon, Portugal/), whose 65th-minute strike gave CSS a brief lead. Both goals came during a strong stretch of second-half play as the Saints responded after conceding early.
Senior goalkeeper Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) was solid once again between the posts, finishing with five saves. He came up big in key moments, including a stop in the 88th minute to preserve the draw as Hamline pushed forward late.
St. Scholastica also got key contributions from freshman forward Tim Bader (München, Germany/), who assisted on the second goal, and senior defender David Lopez (Jalisco, Mexico/Universidad de Guadalajara), who added an assist and played a central role in the Saints' build-up play.
The match was physical throughout, with 19 fouls called and two yellow cards issued. The Saints showed composure under pressure, especially in the final 10 minutes as both sides searched for a winner.
The Saints outshot the Pipers 12-11 and held a slight edge in possession, but Hamline found the equalizer in the 74th minute to deny the Saints all three points.
With the result, the Saints move to 1-7-4 overall and 1-3-1 in MIAC play. They'll return home on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to face Saint John's University in a league contest at 2:00 p.m. on Harkins Field.
