ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Scholastica jumped out to an early advantage but couldn't hold off a second-half surge from Macalester, falling 3-1 Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium.
The Saints struck first in the 29th minute when sophomore forward
Gabriel Marchesoni (Surrey, Canada/) buried a penalty kick to give CSS the 1-0 lead. The goal capped a strong opening half for the Saints, who kept Macalester off the board thanks to a sharp performance from goalkeeper
Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS). Hallberg tallied five first-half saves, including key stops on shots from Gaven Johnson and Joey Burica, to preserve the halftime lead.
Macalester responded after the break, converting three goals in an 11-minute span. Chris Frantz equalized in the 64th minute off an assist from Ondieki Maina, who then put the Scots ahead in the 70th minute with a strike of his own. Macalester added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to close out the scoring.
The Saints finished with five shots, including two on goal from Marchesoni and two more from
Parker Chastey (Duluth, MN/Denfeld HS), who led a late offensive push with several attempts in the final 10 minutes. Hallberg totaled five saves in net across 90 minutes.
With the result, St. Scholastica moves to 2-11-4 overall and 2-5-1 in MIAC play. The Saints return to action on October 25th when they take on the Cardinals of St. Mary's at
Kenny Harkins' Field. Kickoff is at 1pm.
