Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's basketball team played the first game in tonight's home doubleheader against the Knights of Carleton College. The Saints dominated the floor against the Knights, coming out on top with a final score of 72-46.
How it Happened
First Quarter
The game opened up with both teams exhibiting good defense, forcing each other to turn the ball over, this was all halted when the Saints got on the board first with a layup from Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS). Carleton was quick to answer, tying the game up right after.
The Saints went on to force a turnover and went down the floor and saw Jada Bierschbach (Richmond, Minn./Rocori HS) hit a jump shot once again giving the Saints the lead.
After collecting five more points, the Saints fouled the Knights on a layup that went in, allowing the Knights to capitalize with a free throw, they sank their free throw bringing the Saint's lead to four.
As the time left in the quarter dwindled, the Saint's lead only grew as they continued to knock down their shots, and stopped the Knights from making theirs.
The first quarter came to an end, with the Saints making three more shots before time ran out, and preventing the Knights from scoring for four and a half minutes.
Second Quarter
The second quarter opened similar to the first with good defense from both teams, however, this time around Carleton was the first on the board, making one of two free throws. Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) and Lind were both quick to answer Carleton, making a jump shot and layup respectively.
Lind continued to allow the Saints to dominate the Knights, making another layup, and extending the Saint's lead to 16 points early in the second.
The Knights were once again fouled on a good layup, giving them another opportunity to convert their layup to a three-point play, and again, they succeeded. Carleton went on to make a jump shot right after their free throw and cut the Saint's lead to 11 points.
The Saints were quick to rebuild their lead, with a pair of two-point jump shots courtesy of Madison Kenyon (Woodstock, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS).
The game went into a scoring drought for two minutes following the Saint's jump shots, but Lind broke the silence with a layup, extending the lead back to 16 nearing the end of the quarter.
Carleton followed Lind's layup with a three-pointer, but that was silenced by another layup from the Saints.
Carleton ended the quarter with another three-point shot, ending the first half with a score of 34-19.
Third Quarter
Lind opened the third with two made free throws, starting the Saints off on the right foot this quarter.
The Knights were not as fortunate, making just one of two free throws on their visit to the stripe, failing to even out the free throws from Lind.
The Saints went on to score six points in a row before the Knights were able to get another basket, but they came back with a three-pointer of their own.
Another good chunk of time passed with an absence of scoring from either side, that was until the Knights made two layups, split by one layup from the Saints.
Carleton made another two layups, but in between those layups was Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS), who connected from three-point range.
Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) found herself on the free throw line, and made one of two shots, before the Saints came back down the floor and sank another three-pointer that was then followed by two layups, one for each team.
Simmons once again connected from deep, extending the Saint's lead to 23 points.
Lind was on the free throw line again, and this time she managed to sink both free throws, giving the Saints a clean 25-point lead.
With just two seconds remaining in the quarter, Kenyon had the ball beyond the arch and drilled the shot, giving the Saints a 26-point lead going into the intermission.
Fourth Quarter
The Saints sat on a comfortable 26-point lead going into the fourth quarter, and they did not wait to get things going. Lind opened things up once again with a layup, that was quickly followed by a three-pointer from Haus.
Carleton, once again on the free throw line, sank only one of two of their shots. Carleton got the ball back after the Saints had an unsuccessful offensive possession, and made a two-point jump shot that was quickly followed up by a three-point shot, cutting the Saints lead to 27 points.
On a bit of a run, Carleton went on to score six consecutive points before the Saints were able to score again. When they did, Kenyon answered with a layup.
Two minutes went by without scoring, until the Saints' Carlson hit another layup, continuing to work on their lead.
Brooklyn Sarauer (Bloomer, WI/Bloomer HS) hit a mid-range jump shot to bring the Saint's lead back to 27 points.
Carleton was running out of time to break the lead the Saints had built up to this point in the game, and on the free throw line again, they managed to only make one of two shots with just over a minute remaining in the game.
As the final minute wound down, neither team managed to score, ending the game with a final score of 72-46.
