St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled this afternoon to take on the Scots from Maclester in a MIAC conference matchup. The Saints took a double-digit into the halftime break, and continued their success into the second half, coming away with a 76-55 victory today.
How it Happened
First Quarter
Macalester jumped out to a quick 7-0 run before Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) and Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) both scored layups to get the Saints offense started.
Later in the quarter, Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) got her afternoon started with a successful field goal, as did Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) who also knocked a layup to tie the game at 10-10.
Carlson continued her fast start to close out the quarter, as she scored CSS' last eight points in the quarter, giving the Saints a 18-12 lead after one quarter.
Second Quarter
Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS) knocked down her first three-pointer in the early moments of the second quarter coming off an assist from Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS).
After Carlson converted another layup, the Saints earned their points from the free throw line, with Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) and Riegel both scoring and advancing the Saints lead to 26-15.
With under four minutes to play in the first half, Johnson converted an and-one to give CSS more cushion, leading 29-20.
Jada Bierschbach (Richmond, Minn./Rocori HS) scored the next five points for CSS, earning her points from both the field and the free throw line, followed by Carlson's jumper to end the half for CSS, leading 36-26.
Third Quarter
Johnson knocked down her first field goal of the second half with a three-pointer to put an end to a quick run for the Scots.
Midway through the quarter, both Carlson and Bierschbach picked up right where they left off, as the pair pushed the Saints lead back to double-digits, leading 43-30.
Johnson and Simmons both converted field goals from beyond-the-arc, as the Saints continued their success heading into the final quarter of play, leading 49-41 over the Scots.
Fourth Quarter
Back-to-back three-pointers from Johnson gave the Saints their early start to begin the quarter, as the Saints held a 55-44 lead.
Layups from Haus and Riegel moments later helped keep the Saints in front entering the final few minutes of the game.
Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) scored her first points with 5:41 left in the contest, and moments later Carlson drilled a three-pointer to push the Saints lead to 64-46.
After Riegel converted an and-one just seconds later, Madison Kenyon (Woodstock, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS) knocked down a shot from three-point range, as the Saints were able to finish off the Scots, securing a 76-55 victory in today's contest.
Top Performers
- Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) led the Saints in scoring today, recording 21 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and logging the Saints' only blocked shot.
- Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) connected from three-point range four times in the victory today, as the junior finished the contest with 17 points.
- Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) finished today with eight points, while also adding three assists and three rebounds.
