Duluth, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell tonight in its first matchup against the Knights from Carleton College. The Knights took an early lead in the first half, with the Saints clawing their way back, but the Knights were able to pull away from CSS late, taking tonight's contest by a score of 85-67.
How it Happened
Drelyn Jones (Leyden, Il./Leyden High School) got the Saints offense started with a jumper to get a quick lead, but the Knights were able to respond with a 13-0 run to lead less than three minutes in.
Kobe Karels (Cambridge, Minn./Isanti (Aurora University)) knocked down his first three-pointer moments later to cut into the deficit, however the Knights continued their hot start, leading 26-6 at the 12:50 mark.
Bryce Shoto (Owego, Il./Oswego East High School) and Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater High School) quickly added to the Saints' total with three-pointers of their own to make the score 28-14.
After Thomson got his second three-pointer to fall, Kai Penney (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo High School) and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) both got putback layups to go, as the Saints only trailed by seven points.
Thomson scored the next five points for the Saints, scoring on a layup and a three-pointer, as the Saints now only trailed 32-28.
CSS was able to get their deficit down to just one possession, as Keykal got a layup to fall and Jones and Overstreet both connected on jumpers, with the Knights barely clinging to a 38-35 lead over the Saints.
Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) ended the scoring for the Saints in the first half, scoring on a jumper, but the Knights held an eight-point lead over the Saints at the halftime break, leading 45-37.
Second Half
Carleton got their lead back up to double figures before Overstreet knocked down another jumper to start the half, with the Saints trailing 51-39.
After Crockett Jr. got another jumper to fall, the Knights went on a quick 15-1 run, expanding their lead to 66-45.
Karels knocked down yet another three-pointer and Thomson converted another field goal at the 8:29 mark, but the Knights still held a considerable lead.
Overstreet successfully knocked down three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt, which was later followed by Thomson and Washington scoring in the paint with Washington throwing down a thunderous slam dunk.
Washington scored his second basket on the fastbreak just a few possessions later, this time opting for a layup, as Jones also got a layup to fall, but the Saints still sat well back of the Knights.
Keykal would score the final four points for CSS tonight, but the Knights took this contest by a score of 85-67.
