Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's basketball team played first in today's double-header vs. the Pipers of Hamline University. The Saints Battled hard against the Pipers, but were not able to overcome the deficit and lost with a final score of 52-61.
How it Happened
First Quarter
The first quarter of play saw the Saints take a 4-0 lead early in the game. The Pipers began to take the lead with a three point shot. After the Pipers three was made, The Saints found themselves on the free throw line, and capitalized with Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) making one of two free throws to tie the game back up.
Following the early action, the game saw a two-minute drought in scoring, with neither team able to sink a shot, keeping the game at 5-7. That was until Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) made one of two free throws, starting things back up.
In the remaining minutes of play, both teams traded blows, with neither team relinquishing the lead. The first quarter came to an end with a score of 15-14.
Second Quarter
Quarter two saw the Saints starting things off strong on both offense and defense. The Saints began with a layup and a made free throw that was quickly followed by strong defense, effectively shutting down the Pipers.
It took the Pipers just under four minutes to get their first points of the quarter, that was then followed by a Pipers timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, both teams traded three-pointers, with four being made in a row, two by each team. After that run, the score was 30-24.
The first half came to an end wit ha score of 38-29, with the Saints dominating on offense to end the first half.
Third Quarter
The third quarter opened slow for both teams, with a fourth of the time being played before the Pipers landed a layup followed by a two-point shot by the Saints to open the scoring up.
The third quarter saw neither team out front for a prolonged period of time, and that is reflected by the lack of scoring in this quarter, the final score at the end of the third quarter was 43-44, with the Pipers ahead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Fourth Quarter
Hoping to secure another MIAC Conference win, the Saints went all in in the fourth, starting things off early with two two-point shots made, giving the saints a three-point lead early on.
It would take the Pipers just over three minutes to respond to the Saints, scoring a layup of their own, making it a one-point game with 6:42 left to play.
Just over a minute later, Hamline took the lead with a two-point jump shot with a little under six minutes remaining.
Following the Hamline layup, and now a one-point lead, the Pipers found themselves on the free throw line two times, only able to sink two of four possible shots.
Following a Hamline layup, the Saints too were on the free throw line, but like the Pipers, were only able to sink half the shots. At this point in the game, the Pipers were now up 48-55.
As time began to wind down, the Saints desperately tried to dig out of the hole, intentionally fouling the Pipers, but the final buzzer sounded and the Pipers were ahead by nine points over the Saints.

The Saints (9-7, 6-3 MIAC) will once again be at home, this time to play the Knights (3-14, 2-8 MIAC) of Carleton College, on Wednesday, January 29. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
