Duluth, MN - The Saint Scholastica men's hockey team took on the Cobbers of Concordia for the second game of the weekend. Despite a highly competitive match with goals from both Wyatt Wurst (Edina, MN) and Brodie Girod (Clavet, SK, Canada/Clavet HS), the Cobbers took the win in overtime.
How it Happened
1st Period
The Saints opened the first period on the defensive, as Concordia registered the first three shots on target of the game. While the Saints made a few offensive attempts, the Cobbers registered five shots to the Saint's one by the midpoint through the period.
With just 37 seconds of the first period, the Cobbers capitalized to take a 1-0 lead.
By the end of the period, the Cobbers had tallied seven shots compared to the Saint's three.
2nd Period
The Saints entered the second period determined to equalize, quickly registering the first shot of the period. Their efforts paid off at 5:03, when Brodie Girod (Clavet, SK, Canada/Clavet HS), assisted by Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS), scored to tie up the game and kept the Saints in this tightly contested matchup.
At 14:30, Saints sophomore goalie Brenden Stroble (Livonia, MI/Adlai E. Stevenson HS) delivered a crucial reaction save to maintain the deadlock.
However, at 18:16, the Cobbers were given a counter attack opportunity in which they converted to reclaim a 2-1 lead.
The Saints responded with immediate pressure following the goal, but their efforts were not enough to tie up the game.
3rd Period
The final period of this closely contested game started off with energy. Wyatt Wurst (Edina, MN) made an immediate impact, scoring unassisted on the period's first shot to tie the game at 2-2.
The Saints continued with their pressure in an attempt to complete the comeback, but were matched by Concordia's strong defense.
Around the halfway mark, the Cobbers tested the Saints goalie with flurries of shots, but Stroble remained firm and denied them from another lead.
With neither team able to break the deadlock, the third period concluded at 2-2, pushing this match into overtime.
Overtime
As overtime commenced, both teams came out with high energy in an attempt to secure the win.
The Saints had several close calls, including a breakaway attempt by junior forward Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, SK, Canada/St. Joseph HS) that struck the post. Despite their chances, the Cobbers seized on a quick counterattack and scored the game winner with 33 seconds remaining on the clock.
