Box Score Menomonie, Wis. - The St. Scholastica women's soccer team traveled across the border to take on the Blue Devils from Wisconsin-Stout this afternoon. While both teams took turns trying to net the go-ahead goal, strong defense is what defined this match, as today's action ended in a 0-0 draw.
How it Happened
1st Half
The Blue Devils had their first scoring opportunity to break the tie in the early minutes, but the Saints dodged a bullet as both shots missed the net. Sydney Plemel () got the start at goalkeeper for CSS today and she was off to a strong start with a save on her first shot on goal at 14:48, to keep the game at 0-0.
Plemel continued her success midway through the first half with a pair of saves to keep the Blue Devils scoreless.
The Saints had an opportunity to score with a corner kick in the 28th minute, but a strong defensive showing from UW-Stout denied the Saints an opportunity to score its first goal of the day.
Plemel denied the Blue Devils in its last attempt to score before the end of the first half, with the score sitting at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
2nd Half
St. Scholastica got its first shots on goal in the 51st and 52nd minutes, with Kaitlyn Sautter (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) and Peyton Mathiasen (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) both trying to find the back of the net, but the Saints were unable to put one on the board, the game remained 0-0.
Ongoing neutral zone play prevented both teams from taking an offensive advantage. But, in the 54th minute, Julia Lewis (Maple Grove, MN) took her turn at trying to beat the Blue Devils' goalkeeper, but the shot missed just high and over the net.
The Blue Devils quickly turned around and took three shots in under two minutes. They missed the first shot attempt, Plemel then faced another shot on goal and she continued her successful day in the net with yet another save.
Lily Rippie took a shot to put the Saints on top in the 66th minute, but the Saints were denied a goal, with the score still at 0-0.
Both teams showed their strong defensive play, with no shots being put on goal for nearly 30 minutes, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
