DUBUQUE, Iowa – The College of St. Scholastica women's soccer team continued its strong start to the season Thursday evening, earning a 3-1 road victory over the University of Dubuque at Oyen Field.
The win was the third straight for the Saints, who improved to 3-1 overall.
St. Scholastica struck first in the 24th minute when Lauren Hughes (Cloquet, MN/Cloquet High School) found the back of the net off an assist from Anna Manion (Superior, WI/Superior HS), giving the Saints a 1-0 advantage they carried into halftime.
CSS quickly added to its lead after the break. Bailey Coole (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) scored in the 50th minute, again set up by Manion, to make it 2-0. Manion then got into the scoring column herself at 64:13, finishing a pass from Gianna Hansen (Proctor, MN/Proctor High School) to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Manion played a part in all three St. Scholastica goals, finishing the night with a goal and two assists. Hughes and Coole each added goals for the Saints.
Dubuque broke through in the 79th minute when Rylie Mensik scored off an assist from Claire Husnick, cutting the Saints' lead to 3-1.
The Spartans had an opportunity to pull within one late, earning a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining. Chloe Patrick (Brainerd, MN/Brainerd High School) stopped Maelyn Kluever's attempt to preserve the two-goal advantage. Patrick finished with six saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal for St. Scholastica.
Dubuque held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks, but the Saints made the most of their opportunities, putting six shots on goal and converting three of them.
St. Scholastica will remain in Dubuque for its next contest, facing Loras College at 11 a.m. Saturday.
