Box Score Duluth, MN. - The St. Scholastica Men's Soccer team took to the field today, Monday, September 23 against UW-Stevens Point. The tight competition persisted the entire game, but the Saints took the win 2-1 over the Pointers.
How it Happened
1st Half
The Saints sent the kickoff into open space to create an opportunity. But the Pointers took the first shot on net of the game just 43 seconds in.
Scholastica had two back-to-back shot attempts just past the seven-minute mark, but they both grazed over the crossbar.
The opening 20 minutes of play were fairly even, both teams struggled to fully control the ball, with lots of time being spent at midfield.
At 27:01, the Saints found the back of the net with a goal from Gabriel Marchesoni (Surrey, BC, CA) with help from Lanji Atanga (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) on the assist. The Saints led 1-0.
Harry Cook (Fareham, England/Henry Cort Community College) could be seen all over the field making plays to help the offense score again. Cook managed to tally a second goal for the Saints at 29:13, the perfectly placed shot had the crowd on their feet. Saints led 2-0.
The Pointers battled to get one on the board, but they continued to be unsuccessful. The Saints were controlling all aspects of the game. The half ended 2-0 for the Saints.
2nd Half
The Pointers came out flying in the second half, they took three shots in the first three minutes, and goalkeeper Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) made one massive save.
UWSP started to become aggressive as they were down by two, this resulted in multiple fouls and a ton of throw-ins.
At 71:25, the Pointers closed the gap to one goal, they slipped one by Hallberg to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints.
Both teams made a series of substitutions to get fresh legs on the field. But the chippy game never rested, as several yellow cards were given out.
The clock continued to tick and the Saints ran away with the win 2-1.
