DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica baseball team played in its first games of the Russmatt Invitational in Davenport, Florida today. After the Saints were held scoreless in game one against Roger Williams (RI), CSS was able to score a late run to outlast Suffolk University (MA), to split today's action.
Game One: Roger Williams: 10, CSS: 0
Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) got the Saints its first hit in the top of the first inning with an extra-base hit, but the Saints would strand a runner in scoring position to keep the score at 0-0.
The Hawks from Roger Williams took an early lead in its half of the first inning, scoring on a fielder's choice, while taking a 1-0 lead over the Saints.
Payton Jeffries (Vancouver, Wash./Union HS (Shasta College)) was able to set aside the Hawks in the bottom of the second inning, striking out two in the inning, as the Saints still trailed 1-0.
Jumping to the bottom of the third inning, the Hawks added two more runs in the inning coming on a 2-RBI double, extending its lead to 3-0.
The Saints were held scoreless through the top of the fifth inning, when the Hawks added two more runs to its total, both coming on a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
After the top of the seventh, where the Saints were still unable to bring a man across home plate, Roger Williams was able to break the game open, scoring five runs in the inning as the game was called to mercy rule with the Hawks defeating CSS in game one by a score of 10-0.
Game Two: CSS: 4, Suffolk: 3
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) got the start for the Saints in the second game of the day, and it would begin solidly for Schelonka, as he was able to strike out two Rams batters in the inning.
Schelonka added another strikeout victim to his total in the top of the second, as the game remained scoreless at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning.
Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) picked up the lone CSS base hit in the second and third innings, respectively, as Schelonka held the Rams scoreless through three innings.
Suffolk struck first blood in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on a 2-RBI single to jump out to a 2-0 lead over the Saints.
After Schelonka doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, it would be Stubbles who drove him in on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, as the Saints cut the Hawks' lead in half, trailing 2-1.
Schelonka was able to strike out two more in the top of the fifth inning, bringing his strikeout total to eight for the game, with the Saints trailing 2-1 after five and a half innings.
Braun led off the bottom of the sixth inning for CSS, and after a sacrifice bunt that moved Braun to second, it would be Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)) who drove him in, tying the game at 2-2.
After the Rams reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh inning, CSS immediately tied the game back at 3-3, as Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) drove in Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS), who opened the inning with a leadoff walk, on a sacrifice fly.
Matt Juza (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) entered the game on the mound for the bottom of the eighth inning for the Saints, and the sophomore delivered, striking out the side to keep the score at 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) made his presence be felt by driving a deep shot to left field for a home run to give CSS a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning.
The Saints called on the arm of Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) to deliver the save and shut down the Rams, and that is exactly what he did, striking out all three batters he faced, giving CSS a 4-3 win over Suffolk in game two of the day.
